Obverse description The arms of the City of Exeter displayed on a shield, depicting three castle towers, supported on either side by rampant winged horses (Pegasi). Above the shield is a helm surmounted by a crest of a crowned lion, and below a scrolled ribbon in relief bears the motto SEMPER FIDELIS. The circular legend surrounds the entire composition.

Reverse description The field features an elaborate die-struck wreath composed of various botanical elements including flowers, foliage, berries, and fruit in high relief, encircling an engraved central panel. Within the panel the recipient inscription reads: Awarded to Mr J. Griffin for 12 Greenhouse Plants, 22nd Septr 1842. Below the wreath, along the lower rim, the engraver's signature W. SPREAT JUN. INVT is incuse.
