Obverse description The coat of arms of the University of the West Indies in high relief at centre, featuring a shield bearing an open book above three wavy lines, supported by foliate mantling, and surmounted by a pelican with wings displayed standing on a wreath. Scrolls bearing the motto ORIENS EX OCCIDENTE LUX flank the crest. The circular legend THE UNIVERSITY OF THE WEST INDIES runs along the raised rim.
