Obverse description Bust of James Beaumont Neilson facing left, lightly draped, in high relief within a recessed field. The legend arching around the upper border reads '1793-1863 J. BEAUMONT NEILSON', with the inscription 'NEILSON HOT BLAST' in three lines to the right of the effigy.

Reverse description A large ornate cartouche in the centre of the field bears the prize inscription in five lines, surmounted by Scottish thistles and flanked by scrollwork. Below the cartouche is the armorial shield of the Royal Technical College, Glasgow, supported by laurel branches and accompanied by the motto ribbon reading 'MENTE ET MANU'. The circular border legend reads 'THE ROYAL TECHNICAL COLLEGE GLASGOW'.
