Obverse description The obverse displays a finely detailed heraldic coat of arms in high relief, featuring a quartered shield with two hound supporters rampant on either side, surmounted by a crest and flanked by elaborate acanthus scrollwork at the base. The motto TRIA JUNCTA IN UNO appears on a scroll beneath the shield. The legend MAKDOUGALL BRISBANE PRIZE arcs around the upper portion of the field.

Reverse description The reverse features an open laurel wreath enclosing an engraved inscription naming the recipient Basil A. Pilkington, citing his paper on recent improvements in electric single wiring with special reference to the Terrold System No. 4956, read on 27 May 1912, and noting the prize value of 5 sovereigns. The legend ROYAL SCOTTISH SOCIETY OF ARTS arcs around the upper field, with INSTIT. 1821 and INCORP. 1841 appearing in the lower exergue.
