Obverse description A British lion dominates a prostrate tiger in high relief, symbolising the British victory over Tipu Sultan. A Union flag on a staff rises to the left, and a plain standard to the right, with an Arabic legend above in the field. The date in Latin numerals appears in the exergue: IV. MAY. MDCCXCIX., and engraver's initials C.H.K. are visible at the base of the scene.
