Obverse description The quartered armorial shield of the Company of Surgeons displayed in high relief at centre, surmounted by a crest of a bird perched on a wreath. The shield bears lions, anchors, and serpents in its quarterings, with a crown at the fess point. The arms are flanked by an olive branch to the left and an oak branch to the right. The Latin legend arcs around the upper field, with the date in Roman numerals along the lower exergue.

Reverse description A draped classical figure, identified as Galen, stands facing right and gazes downward at a human skeleton recumbent in the foreground.
