Obverse description Pallas Athena seated facing left in high relief, wearing helmet and aegis, extending a laurel wreath in her right hand while resting her left arm on a small figure; surrounding her are symbols of learning including a terrestrial globe, scrolls, and scientific instruments to the left, and architectural and chemical apparatus to the right. The dedicatory legend arcs around the upper field, with the recipient's name and date inscribed in the lower exergue.

Reverse description The armorial bearings of the Royal Society of London displayed in high relief at centre, consisting of a quartered shield bearing lions, supported on either side by two crowned lions rampant on an elaborate acanthus cartouche; above the shield a crown surmounted by an eagle with wings displayed. The motto appears on a ribbon scroll in the lower exergue.
