Additional information

Gander's Chamber of Commerce issued this trade dollar during the town's peak years as a transatlantic refueling hub — a role that defined the community from the late 1930s onward. Before jet aircraft extended their range sufficiently to bypass Newfoundland entirely, virtually every commercial flight between North America and Europe touched down at Gander International. The airport effectively built the town.

By 1983, that traffic had been declining for nearly two decades, and issues like this one were as much civic assertion as commerce.
