Obverse description Bare-necked, laureate bust of Emperor Vitellius facing right, rendered in high relief with bold, fleshy features characteristic of Julio-Claudian portraiture. The laureate wreath is depicted with fine detail, and the emperor's pronounced jaw and thick neck are faithfully represented. The surrounding legend runs clockwise in Latin capital letters within the outer border of the flan. The portrait conveys the commanding authority of the emperor during his brief reign in AD 69.
