| Reverse description | The reverse depicts Emperor Trajan seated left on a curule chair (sella curulis) raised upon a tribunal or platform, in the act of bestowing kingdoms upon foreign client rulers. Before him stand two or three barbarian figures in Eastern or Parthian dress, approaching in supplication or reception of his grant of authority, some bearing attributes of royalty. The scene commemorates Trajan's diplomatic and military interventions in the East, including the assignment of client kingdoms in Armenia and Mesopotamia during his Parthian campaign. The legend REGNA ADSIGNATA ('kingdoms assigned') is distributed across the upper field, flanking the scene on either side. The composition is rendered in vigorous high relief, with multiple figures occupying the field in a dynamic ceremonial tableau. |
