Obverse description Laureate head of Emperor Trajan facing right, rendered with finely detailed curling hair and a strong, idealized imperial portrait typical of early Trajanic coinage. The bust is bare-shouldered and truncated at the neck. The encircling Latin legend occupies the full periphery of the flan, reading from lower left around to lower right. The portrait is modeled in high relief with confident engraving characteristic of the Rome mint at the opening of Trajan's reign.

Additional information

Struck in Trajan's first full year as emperor, this aureus dates to the months immediately following Nerva's death in January 98 AD — a transitional moment when Trajan was still commanding Roman forces on the Rhine and did not return to Rome until 99. The COS II dating anchors the issue precisely; Trajan held his second consulship that year before assuming COS III in 100.

Calicó 1042 is among the better-documented die pairings for this early group, with the BMC RE 31 specimen long serving as a reference standard for the type.
