Obverse description Personification of Africa in right profile, her head enveloped in an elephant-skin headdress, the trunk and tusks framing the face in characteristic Roman Republican allegorical style. To the left of the portrait stands a simpulum (jug) with its handle oriented to the right, and to the right a lituus (augural staff), both serving as sacerdotal emblems associated with the imperator's religious authority. The legend MAGNVS appears in the field, identifying Gnaeus Pompeius Magnus as the issuing commander. The design is enclosed within a laurel-wreath border, a mark of triumphant dignity appropriate to the coin's commemorative purpose.
