The legend C•CAESAR•DICT•PERP•PONT•MAX encircles the portrait within a beaded border, affirming Caesar's titles as Perpetual Dictator and Pontifex Maximus. The field is plain, devoid of subsidiary devices or mint marks. The juxtaposition of the two Caesars on obverse and reverse served a clear dynastic and legitimising propaganda purpose. The engraving style, though competent, shows the somewhat hurried execution characteristic of military mint production in 43 BC. |
