Struck in the final year of Hadrian's reign, when the emperor was gravely ill at Baiae and had already adopted Antoninus Pius as his successor. The Securitas type issued at this moment was less a political boast than a deliberate signal — that the succession was settled, the empire stable, and the transition orderly. Hadrian died in July 138, making coins from this narrow window among the last aurei produced under his authority.
