| Reverse description | Two standing figures face one another across a lighted altar set on a low base in the center of the field. At left, a togate figure identified as the emperor or a priest stands holding a patera over the altar; at right, the Genius, rendered as a semi-draped male figure wearing a modius or turreted crown, extends a patera toward the altar with his right hand while holding a cornucopiae in his left. The exergual legend V S PRO RED is incuse below the ground line, while the circular legend P M TR P COS III is distributed across the upper field. The composition conveys the theme of vows undertaken for the emperor's safe return. |
