| Obverse description | Laureate, cuirassed bust of Emperor Hadrian facing right, depicted with his characteristic short beard, the effigy shown from the front with the head in profile. The emperor wears a muscled cuirass with pteryges visible at the shoulder, conveying imperial military authority. A beaded border encircles the design. The bold, naturalistic portraiture is characteristic of early Hadrianic coinage struck at Rome in AD 117, immediately following his accession. The encircling legend runs clockwise around the periphery of the flan. |
