| Obverse description | Bare-headed, draped and cuirassed bust of Hadrian facing right, rendered with the emperor's characteristic short curly hair and full beard — a distinctive iconographic innovation introduced by Hadrian on Roman imperial coinage. The portrait is executed in a naturalistic Hellenistic style with finely modelled facial features. The encircling Latin legend reads HADRIANVS AVGVSTVS, distributed around the periphery of the flan. The flan itself is slightly irregular in outline, consistent with hammered gold coinage of the period. |
