Domitian's third tribunician power places this aureus firmly in 84 AD, the same year he assumed the censorship for life — an extraordinary concentration of authority that accelerated senatorial hostility toward his reign. The COS X iteration of his consular titulature is a useful anchor for die study, as the mint's output was reorganized that year following earlier experimental phases of his coinage.
RIC II.1 195 is not a rare type, but attrition in gold is always severe. Survivors overwhelmingly passed through medieval or early modern hoards before reaching the market.
