Obverse description Laureate head of Emperor Claudius facing right, with the portrait rendered in the restrained, classicizing style typical of early Imperial Roman coinage. The bust is bare-shouldered, presenting the emperor with a strong, mature profile. The surrounding legend is incuse and runs clockwise around the periphery of the flan, identifying the emperor with his full titulature. The portrait exhibits the characteristic flan irregularities consistent with hand-struck hammered coinage of the period. The field is smooth and unadorned, focusing attention entirely on the imperial effigy.
