Obverse description Bare head of Augustus facing right, rendered in finely detailed high relief with naturalistic portraiture characteristic of Augustan classicism. The emperor's hair is styled in the distinctive comma-shaped locks over the forehead, consistent with his official portraiture type. The circular legend is incuse around the periphery of the flan, reading S P Q R IMP CAESARI. The portrait is set within a well-centered field on an irregular hammered flan of rich gold.
