| Obverse description | Bare head of Augustus facing right, rendered in fine high relief with detailed naturalistic portraiture characteristic of Augustan classicism. The emperor's hair is depicted in short, neatly arranged locks swept forward over the forehead. The legend CAESAR AVGVSTVS is inscribed in two arcs encircling the portrait, CAESAR to the left and AVGVSTVS to the right. The flan is slightly irregular, as typical of hammered Roman aurei of this period. The overall style reflects the refined Hellenistic-influenced court art of the early Principate. |
