Additional information

Issued in the aftermath of Augustus's diplomatic recovery of the legionary standards lost by Crassus at Carrhae in 53 BC — a humiliation Rome had nursed for over three decades — this aureus belongs to a commemorative series celebrating that negotiated return as though it were a military triumph. The S P Q R CL V legend references the clipeus virtutis, the golden shield voted to Augustus by the Senate in 27 BC honoring his virtus, clementia, iustitia, and pietas. That the standards came back through Parthian diplomacy rather than Roman arms was a distinction Augustus worked aggressively to obscure.
