| Reverse description | Augustus, togate, seated left upon a raised platform inscribed LVD S, extending his right hand to present suffimenta (ritual incense materials) to one of two togate figures standing before him. The scene commemorates the Secular Games (Ludi Saeculares) of 17 BC and the distribution of purificatory materials to the Roman people. The reverse composition is arranged in a ceremonial, processional style consistent with Augustan propaganda coinage celebrating religious and civic renewal. The legend L MESCINIVS AVG SVF P arcs around the field, identifying the moneyer Lucius Mescinius Rufus and the suffimenta populi. The scene is rendered with multiple figures in shallow relief, filling the flan in a balanced and authoritative composition. |
