| Reverse description | A powerful bull, depicted in high relief, advancing and butting to the right with head lowered and tail raised, standing on a ground line below which appears the legend IMP XII. The animal is rendered with considerable naturalistic detail in musculature and form, consistent with the accomplished die-cutting of Lugdunum mint output under Augustus. The reverse type is associated with Augustus's twelfth imperatorial acclamation and may carry symbolic allusions to strength and Roman martial virtus. The field is otherwise plain, focusing attention entirely on the forceful image of the charging bull. |
