| Obverse description | Bare-headed, draped bust of Antoninus Pius facing right, depicted with curly hair and a short beard, rendered in high relief characteristic of early Antonine portraiture. The effigy displays a naturalistic likeness of the emperor as Caesar, prior to his elevation to Augustus. The obverse legend encircles the bust, reading IMP T AEL CAES HADRI ANTONINVS, identifying the emperor as Titus Aelius Caesar Hadrianus Antoninus. The field is plain, and the coin's edge shows the characteristic beaded border of hammered Roman aurei. The portrait style reflects the transitional period of 138 AD when Antoninus had been adopted by Hadrian but not yet assumed full imperial titles. |
