| Obverse description | Bare-headed and laureate bust of Antoninus Pius facing right, depicted with short beard and draped paludamentum over the left shoulder, rendered in the high-relief style characteristic of early Antonine gold coinage. The portrait displays the emperor's mature physiognomy with close-cropped hair and a neatly trimmed beard. The encircling obverse legend reads IMP T AEL CAES HADRI ANTONINVS, identifying the emperor in his capacity as Caesar and adoptive heir of Hadrian prior to his full accession. The flan is slightly irregular, as typical of hammered aurei of this period, struck at the Rome mint in AD 138. |
