Additional information

Carausius seized Britain and northwestern Gaul in 286, declaring himself Augustus and holding off Maximian's attempted reconquest for nearly a decade. His coins were deliberately struck to a higher silver standard than contemporary continental issues — a calculated move to project legitimacy and attract loyalty from troops and merchants alike. The TVTELA AVG type from Rotomagus, modern Rouen, reflects his control of the Gallic coastal mint, one of several he commandeered to sustain a propaganda output that rivaled Rome's own.

He was murdered by his finance minister Allectus in 293, the same year Constantius Chlorus began the campaign that would eventually retake Britain.
