Obverse description The Virgin Mary (Theotokos) depicted nimbate and enthroned on a backless throne in frontal aspect, vested in pallium and maphorium, with the nimbate, beardless bust of the Christ Child displayed upon her breast. The field bears the abbreviated Marian inscription MP ΘΥ flanking her shoulders. The design is contained within a beaded border, executed in the characteristic Byzantine scyphate (cup-shaped) fabric. The rendering reflects the Blachernitissa iconographic tradition common to late Komnenian coinage.
