Obverse description Within a plain inner circle bordered by a beaded ring, the Grand Master Roger de Pins is depicted kneeling to the left in full robes, his hands raised in supplication before a tall patriarchal (double-barred) cross set upon steps; a pine cone device appears to the right of the figure, serving as a heraldic pun on his surname. The figure is rendered in the Gothic hammered style characteristic of Hospitaller coinage of the mid-fourteenth century. A circumscribed uncial Latin legend runs around the periphery of the coin, separated from the inner field by the beaded border.
