Additional information

Nader Shah's monetary reforms of the late 1730s restructured the Safavid-inherited coinage system around a new gold unit, the ashrafi, calibrated to compete with Ottoman and Mughal trade currencies circulating across the Iranian plateau. The Mashhad mint held particular political significance for Nader: the city was his base of operations before his rise to the throne, and he invested it with prestige accordingly. Type D distinguishes itself within the series by specific die arrangement, catalogued under A#2743 separately from the more common Mashhad emissions.
