Nader Shah struck these Ashrafis at Mashhad with particular political intent — the city was his base of operations and effectively his capital before he formally declared himself Shah in 1736 at the Mughal-inspired assembly on the Moghan plain. The Mashhad mint was among the first he brought under disciplined control after sweeping the Afghans out of Persia, and early Afsharid gold from this facility tends to show the tightest die workmanship of the reign.
Type A designations within this series distinguish pre-coronation issues, a chronologically narrow window of under two years.
