Additional information

Bilbilis, a municipium in the upper Ebro valley of Hispania Tarraconensis, named Lucius Aelius Sejanus as co-eponym on this issue — the same year Tiberius had him executed. Sejanus had been de facto ruler of Rome while Tiberius withdrew to Capri, and the Spanish municipia that flattered him with joint eponymous honors were suddenly holding coins that had become politically embarrassing. Most were likely pulled from circulation rapidly, which partly explains the scarcity of survivors in decent condition.
