Reverse description The reverse depicts the facade of the Temple of Janus, shown as a rectangular shrine with a latticed or barred window visible on the left side and a set of double doors to the right, both doors shown closed to symbolize peace throughout the Roman world. The S C (Senatus Consultum) mark of senatorial authority is placed flanking the temple, S to the left and C to the right. The surrounding legend PACE P R TERRA MARIQ PARTA IANVM CLVSIT proclaims the closing of the gates of the Janus temple in celebration of peace achieved on land and sea. This type is historically significant as one of the few Roman coin types to explicitly commemorate the rare ceremonial closing of the Janus precinct.
