| Reverse description | Tyche of the city, turreted and veiled, seated right upon a diphros (backless chair), holding a palm branch in her right hand as a symbol of civic prosperity and victory. At her feet, the river god Kydnos (the principal river of Tarsus) reclines in the lower field, depicted as a youthful male figure swimming rightward and crowned with sedge reeds, his sinuous form representing the life-giving waters of the city. The reverse legend is disposed in two lines around the field, identifying the issuing city and its metropolitan status. The composition reflects the standard civic iconographic programme of Cilician coinage under the Roman Empire. |
