Reverse description Commodus, capite velato (head veiled) and wearing a toga, stands facing left, extending a patera over a flaming altar in a sacrificial gesture. To the left, a male figure holds an upright torch; to the right, two male figures are depicted, the outermost of whom also holds a torch. Trees flank the composition on both sides, and a latticed barrier or enclosure surrounds the base of the left-hand tree, suggesting a sacred precinct or temenos. The regnal year ΚΔ (year 24 = 183/184 AD) appears in the field alongside the legend ΠΡΟΝΟΙΑ ΘΕωΝ (Providence of the Gods).
