| Reverse description | Draped bust of Plautilla facing right, her hair elaborately coiffed and drawn back in the fashionable style of the Severan period, with the drapery visible at the truncation of the shoulder. The effigy is rendered in a naturalistic provincial style within a beaded border, and the Greek legend ΦΟΥΛΟΥΙΑ ΠΛΑΥΤΙΛΛΑ ΑΥΓΟΥϹΤΑ runs around the periphery of the field, identifying the subject as Fulvia Plautilla Augusta. The portrait, though struck under Elagabalus, commemorates the earlier Severan empress whose image continued to circulate on provincial coinage of the region. |
