Reverse description Eirene, the personification of Peace, depicted standing to the left, draped in a long chiton and himation, extending ears of grain in her right hand and cradling a double cornucopia in her left arm. The figure is rendered in the Hellenistic artistic tradition characteristic of Alexandrian provincial coinage. The date regnal legend L Κ (Year 20) appears in the field, corresponding to the twentieth regnal year of Trajan. The reverse is framed by a dotted border.

Additional information

Year 20 of Trajan's reign in Egypt — the regnal year encoded in that Κ — fell just months before his death in August 117 AD, making this among the last Alexandrian tetradrachms struck in his name. The Alexandria mint operated on an Egyptian calendar year running from late summer, which means production of L Κ pieces would have overlapped almost exactly with news of the emperor's death reaching Egypt and the hasty transition to Hadrian's coinage.

The billon content by this point had degraded considerably from earlier Trajanic issues, a slide that would accelerate sharply under his successors.
