Obverse description Laureate bust of Emperor Elagabalus facing left, depicted in military attire bearing a sceptre resting on the right shoulder and a large round shield decorated with a Gorgoneion (facing Medusa head) viewed from the front. The imperial titulature legend runs around the bust in Greek characters. The portraiture reflects the provincial Eastern style characteristic of the Mesopotamian mint at Edessa, combining Roman imperial iconography with local artistic conventions.
