| Additional information |
Year 30 of Commodus's reign in Egypt, which ran on the Alexandrian calendar from late summer 189 into 190 AD. The Alexandria mint produced billon tetradrachms continuously under Commodus, but output and alloy quality degraded progressively through his reign as the silver content was quietly reduced — by this point the coins were largely bronze with a surface wash of silver that wore away quickly in circulation.
Commodus was assassinated on the last day of 192 AD, strangled in his bath after a poisoning attempt failed. The mint at Alexandria responded to his damnatio memoriae by pivoting immediately to Pertinax issues.
