| Obverse description | Laureate bust of Emperor Commodus facing right, with draped and cuirassed shoulders, portrayed in the characteristic Roman imperial style of the Alexandrian mint. The imperial effigy is rendered with the laureate wreath firmly placed on the head, consistent with Alexandrian tetradrachm portraiture of the period. The Greek legend surrounds the bust in the field, reading Μ ΑΥΡΗ ΚΟΜΜ ΑΝΤωΝΙΝΟϹ ϹΕ, abbreviating the emperor's full titulature. The flan is irregular, as is typical of billon tetradrachms struck at Alexandria during the second century AD. |
