Year 5 of Gordian III's reign in Alexandria corresponds to a period when the young emperor — crowned at thirteen after the murder of Pupienus and Balbinus — was effectively governed by his praetorian prefect Timesitheus, whose daughter Gordian had married. The Alexandrian mint continued issuing its distinctive billon tetradrachms on the reduced weight standard that had been creeping downward since the Severan period, the silver content by this point nominal at best.
The L Ε regnal year dating system is specific to Egyptian provincial coinage and allows precise annual attribution impossible with most Roman imperial issues.
