| Reverse description | The emperor Elagabalus depicted on horseback, advancing to the right, his mount rendered in profile with raised foreleg. The emperor holds a sceptre over his shoulder with his left hand while raising his right hand in a gesture of address or salute, a composition closely following imperial equestrian types. The regnal date formula L Γ (Year 3) appears in the field, corresponding to the third year of Elagabalus's reign in the Alexandrian calendar (219–220 AD). The reverse design is executed in the bold, somewhat schematic style typical of Alexandrian billon tetradrachms of this period. |
