Additional information

Aurelian's accession in 270 AD came at perhaps the lowest point of the Third Century Crisis — the empire had fragmented into three competing states, and Egypt, under the orbit of Zenobia's Palmyrene Empire, would not return to central Roman control until Aurelian's eastern campaign of 272. Alexandrian tetradrachms of this precise moment sit in a politically ambiguous zone: struck in Aurelian's name, yet in a city that would shortly be absorbed by Palmyra before being retaken.

The regnal year L Α — year one — makes this among the earliest issues of his reign from the Alexandrian mint.
