Obverse description The obverse depicts a Joetsu Shinkansen bullet train in high relief advancing toward the viewer, set against a mountainous landscape. The JNR logo appears in the upper field above the train. Along the lower portion of the field, a schematic route map displays the names of stations in rounded cartouches with Kanji script, from 大宮 (Omiya) on the right to 新潟 (Niigata) on the left.
