Macrianus Minor was the younger of two sons elevated to the purple by the general Ballista and their father Macrianus Major following the catastrophic capture of Valerian by Shapur I at the Battle of Edessa in 260 AD. The elder Macrianus, despite engineering the usurpation, was reportedly lame and considered unfit to reign himself — so both sons were proclaimed co-emperors instead. Their authority never extended beyond the eastern provinces; they were defeated and killed in Illyricum in 261 by forces loyal to Gallienus before the rebellion completed its second year.
