The Counts of Habsburg-Laufenburg were a collateral line of the main Habsburg dynasty, steadily losing ground — politically and financially — to their more powerful Austrian cousins throughout the fourteenth century. By the time this Angster was struck, the line was effectively mortgaging its remaining territories. The "Löwenkopf Vierzipfliger" designation distinguishes this by its four-cornered (vierzipflig) flan shape, a regional bracteat-adjacent convention that helps attribute pieces otherwise difficult to separate from contemporary issues of neighboring Rhine authorities.
