Obverse description Laureate bust of Emperor Commodus, depicted with short beard, facing right, clad in cuirass and paludamentum, shown from a rear three-quarter perspective — an unusual and artistically ambitious rendering characteristic of provincial Asiatic coinage of the Antonine period. The imperial legend encircles the bust in Greek characters, identifying the emperor by his Aurelius nomenclature. The flan is notably large, consistent with the prestigious Æ42 denomination issued by the allied cities of Pergamum and Ephesus.
