| Reverse description | Antinous, assimilated to Apollo, reclines to the left upon the back of a griffin in full flight to the right, his right arm raised and resting over his head in a languid, divine pose. The griffin, a creature symbolic of divine power and solar mythology, is depicted with wings spread and forelegs extended in dynamic motion. The composition evokes both the Apolline solar journey and the apotheosis of Antinous. The legend ΚΑΛΧΑΔΟΝΙΟΙϹ appears in the field, and ΙΠΠΩΝ is placed in the exergue, identifying the issuing city of Calchedon and the magistrate Hippon responsible for the emission. |
