| Reverse description | Cybele, the Phrygian mother goddess, is depicted enthroned and riding a biga drawn by two lions moving to the left, a motif of particular regional significance given the prominence of her cult in Asia Minor. The goddess is shown holding a patera in her right hand and resting her left elbow upon a tympanum, her attributes as a deity of nature and fertility. The composition is rendered in the robust provincial style typical of Lydian civic bronzes of the Severan period. The reverse field carries the Greek legend naming the local strategos responsible for the issue. |
