Additional information

Priene occupied a peculiar administrative position during the Severan period — a once-prominent Ionian city increasingly overshadowed by Miletus and Ephesus, yet still issuing civic bronze under its own magistrates. The inscription naming Aurelius Lukios as archon places this coin within a local euergetism framework, where magistrates funded coinage as a form of civic obligation rather than imperial directive.

At 37mm, this is among the larger civic bronzes Priene produced under Severus Alexander — a deliberate choice, as larger flans commanded more visible presence in local markets and public distributions.
